  1. Most trains listed above operate 365 days a year while trains marked with double asterisks (**) operates on holidays only, including Labor's Day, China National Holiday and etc. Train timetable is specified in GMT+8 Beijing China time zone and ticket price is quoted in Renminbi Yuan.
  2. Trains Marked with single asterisk (*) are luxury trains with 2-bed cabin. Prices for luxury soft sleepers are RMB 881 Yuan and RMB 921 Yuan for T trains and prices for luxury soft sleepers are RMB 1235 Yuan and RMB 1392 Yuan for D trains.
  3. There are 3 types of seats on the fastest bullet G train: second class seat, first class seat, deluxe seat or even business class seat. G train has no sleeper cabin. In fact, first class seat, dexlue seat on G train are multi-functional which can be used as sleepers.
  4. High speed bullet D train provides seats and soft sleeper, it doesn't provide hard sleeper.
  5. On normal speed trains including T train and 4-digital train, hard sleeper has three sub-categories: upper hard sleeper, middle hard sleeper and lower hard sleeper. Frequently Asked Questions on Beijing-Shanghai Rail Travel

  1. Question:  Elinor:
We plan to take the G12 from Shanghai to Beijing on a Friday in January, first class. How early do we need to arrive at the station?
    We appreciate your advice.
    Answer:
Check-in time for Beijing-Shanghai High Speed Train begins 20-30 minutes prior to the train's departure. Check-in desk will be closed when the train's departuring time is approaching (3-5 minutes in advance). Therefore, we would advise you arrive the train station before the beginning of check-in time so that you can leave enough time for emergency cases. If you have missed the check-in deadline, your will have to postpone the journey.
  2. Question: Hello Elinor,
i found your contact on webpage with train schedule and fares.
I just wanna ask, the price is for one way or both ways?
If i wanna travel from Beijing to Shanghai with fast train for example G11 in VIP section and back with G22 in the same section it is 2x1750 rmb?
    Thank you for the explanation,
    best wishes,
    Answer:
Yep, you are right, price we listed here is for one way journey only and you should multiply the price by 2 to work out ticket cost for round trips. Please note, here we listed are original prices sold through ticket counters of railway stations.
  3. Question: Hello Elinor Zhu,
I am emailing you with a few questions in mind about a train journey from Shanghai to Beijing. I currently live in Shanghai and have two of my friends from England visiting me in February. The questions i have are the following:
    1) I know that its hard to book a train in advanced so what is the earliest date i can book the train if we want to leave on the 11th of February.
    2) Is it possible and cheaper to book a return train ticket? And looking at the website it is unclear of a rough cost of the train.
If you could answer these questions i would be highly grateful and appreciative.
    Many thanks
    Answer:
    1) Advance train ticket reservation period may changes time by time, therefore, what I told you here is an advance ticket reservation period that validates for non-holiday seasons.
According to the press release from Shanghai Railway Bureau, since the beginning of 2012, advance train ticket reservation period in Shanghai has been changed to 20 days for online booking (www.12306.cn) and telephone booking (95105105), advance ticket reservation period through ticket agency is 9 days and advance ticket reservation period through ticket counter of the train station is 2 days. Please note, advance ticket reservation period mentioned here does not include the journey date. New round ticket issue starts 3pm every day. Depending on which way would you like to reserve the ticket, for example, if you want to reserve online through www.12306.cn for the trip dated 11th of February, the earliest time to reserve is at 3pm of January 31st.
    2) Yep, you can reserve returning ticket. Train tickets in China are sold in fixed prices most of the time. No matter how many ticket would you purchase, they would not give you a discount.
  4. Question: We want to go up the Beijing for a few days and experience the CRH high speed train service. We have the following queries and hope you can provide us some feedback on:
    A. Whats the difference between D type and G type trains?
    B. Are the train carriages or cabins classify into "Smoking" and "Non-smoking" classes? If we book the seats can we request for "Non-smoking" carriages?
    C. If we book the seats on-line, can we pay by VISA or MasterCard ? Also is it Secure Safe?
    D. We have travelling suitcases and hand-carry bags. Can we check these in and bring on board the trains at the same time? Will the suitcases have separate storage compartment for us to keep them?
    Answer:
    A. The two types of trains mentioned mainly differs in speed. G train using CRH3 series has an average speed of 300km per hour and D train using CRH2 series has an average speed of 250km per hour. Some D trains have sleeper cabins while G trains have not.
    B. Beijing-Shanghai High Speed trains including D train and G train use fully enclosed cabins and it is strictly prohibited to smoke on any place of the train. Therefore, you don't have to specifically request a non-smoking carriage.
    C. China Railway Customer Service Center sells ticket online through its official website at www.12306.cn. You can trust to use it to book your ticket online. Unfortunately, the website doesn't accept VISA & MASTER payments online. What's more, it has an English interface, overseas passengers who can't read Chinese will have to find a Chinese language assistant for online booking.
    D. Yep, you can take suitcases and hand-carry bags with you. High speed bullet D train, G train have spacious luggage rack to accommodate your luggage.
  5. Question: Hi Elinor, we are coming to Shanghai on 3rd October and planning to take the bullet train to Beijing on 7th October. I am somewhat confused in relation to booking the train as some websites state you need to buy your ticket and scan and email your passport to China before travelling, whilst others state you can buy your tickets on the day at the station. I would intend to travel 1st class on any "g" train that would be leaving in the morning. Can you advise me as to the best way of processing this and let me have an idea how much this might be in English pounds. Any further information you may need to know, please let me know.
    Regards
    Answer:
Train tickets are sold under real name system . To book ticket through travel agency, overseas clients should at least submit their passport number to further process the booking. Without valid identity information, nobody has right to issue ticket to you. Therefore, if you want to reserve ticket in advance, we suggest you email your passport or Visa information to your travel agency so that they can help you to reserve ticket requested.
Scanned or electric copy of passports or Visa is required in case you want to cancel your ticket, change date on the ticket.
Passenger can purchase ticket on the journey date through ticket counter of the train station without disclosing his/her identity information to third party people. Under you case, since you are traveling during the busiest travel time of the year, you have little change to successfully purchase ticket for scheduled train on the journey date. As the whole China will be on national holiday from October 1st to October 7th and lots of people would use train to travel. Therefore, we suggest you reserve ticket in advance through the ticket agency.
Price for first class ticket (one way) on G train is Renminbi 935 Yuan which values approximate 92 English Pound.
  6. Question: Hello,
I wanted to know: do we have to pay more than the price written on your internet page to book a train ticket "through" ticket agency? and do they send the ticket ? or how do we get them ?
    Answer:
Yep, you are right. According to China railway regulation, ticket agency charges Renminbi 5 Yuan each ticket as booking fee.
You should pick up the ticket from the agency. If you want to have the ticket delivered to your hotel, airport, train station and etc, they may charge some as delivery fee. There is no standard on delivery fee and you should negotiate it with your ticket agency.
  7. Question: Hi,
We are two people that would like to travel from Shanghai to Beijing on monday, the 26th of december. I'm a little uncertain about which time we are going to be able to leave, but it will be some time in the afternoon. Is it possible to reserve tickets? If you go to Hongqiao, can you buy tickets there? And is so, where is the Hongqiao train station exactly?
    Really thankful for your help!
    Answer:
Yep, you should go to Hongqiao Train Station to buy ticket and take high speed train from Shanghai to Beijing. Will you travel from Pudong Airport to Hongqiao Train Station? If so, I'd like to suggest you check this post for transportation guide http://www.transportinchina.com/airline/how-to-transport-from-shanghai-pudong-airport-to-hongqiao-train-station/ .
Hongqiao Train Station locates in the western part of Shanghai with Hongqiao Airport T2 terminal in its neighbourhood and you can reach there by Shanghai Metro Line 2 or Line 10 directly.
If there are still remaining ticket, you can even purchase tickets on your journey date. If you are in Shanghai now, I'd suggest you find a ticket agency nearby and have your ticket reserved in advance as Beijing-Shanghai is a hot route and ticket might have been sold out already if you purchase it on the journey date.
  8. Question:
I want to know if it's possible to purchase/reserve train ticket at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport?
    Answer:
Yep, that's absolutely possible. From January 4th 2012, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport has set up a train ticket booking window to provide more convenient service and its actual place is at F17 window in the departure floor of Hongqiao Airport T2 terminal. Passenger can reserve tickets on almost all trains running around the country 20 days in advance. Working time is from 8am to 9pm Monday to Sunday.
  9. Question: I tried to book train ticket through www.12306.cn with the assistance of a Chinese friend, however, my booking wasn't processed.
When we are about to pay, there is no credit card section that accepts Credit Card Like MAstercard or Visa from other countries. only China Banks. Can you help us with this?
As per the note in payment section, if we will be using other banks we should click unionpay. Upon clicking, still only accredited CHINA BANKS are there. So that is our problem. Hope you can help us.
    Thank you.
    Answer:
Even though overseas users can sign in www.12306.cn by submitting their passports to China, they still need to have an online account with one of China banks including Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank and etc to make online payment after submitting booking form. Payment should be made 30 minutes after filling and submitting online booking form, otherwise, your booking will be automatically cancelled. At currently, the website can't receive payments from overseas users by credit card including Visa, Mastercard and etc.
  10. Question: My fiance's brother have an account in china. He can use it to purchase ticket. Are they delivering the tickets to our Shanghai hotel? or we will be picking it up at the station? If so, Can we pick up the tickets on the date of departure?
    Answer:
According to the official requirements, passengers who reserve ticket online through www.12306.cn using their passports should go to ticket agency, or ticket counter of the train station to pick up their tickets. Once ticket sellers have successfully confirm the order and passport, they will issue the paper ticket to you.

is the credit card useful in China or it has to be cash all the time ?
    Answer:
You will have to pay by Renminbi cash to purchase ticket through ticket counter of the train station or ticket agency. Almost all train stations and ticket agencies don't accept payment by credit card.
  12. Question: It is stated in the website that we have to book 20 days in advance for d-trains. we are planning to take the train from shanghai to beijing on october 23, which is less than 20 days from now. can we still reserve for d-train tickets?
    Answer:
Maximum reservation period for D trains running between Beijing and Shanghai is 20 days (including the journey date), that means, the earliest date to reserve your train is in the afternoon of October 4.
You don't have to reserve the ticket that early. If there are remaining tickets, you can even purchase tickets on the journey date.
  13. Question: will the seats' cushion on the bullet D train be comfortable enough, especially for our backs? may I ask if it is cushioned?
    Answer:
the fact is, seats on the bullet trains are classified into first class seat, second class seat, not hard seat and soft seat and both of the seats are cushioned.
Difference between first class seat and second class seat on Shanghai-Beijing high speed D train is that first class seat is more spacious: there are four seats in one row for first class seat and there are five seats in one row for second class seat.
  14. Question: What is the content of the category "Soft sleeper"? Is it a seat that can be used as a bed or is it a cabin?
    Answer:
There are two sub-categories in soft sleeper: bottom soft sleeper and upper soft sleeper.
It's something like like a bed with 190 cm in lenth and 60cm in width. There are four soft sleepers in one cabin: two bottom soft sleeper and two upper soft sleeper.
Price for bottom soft sleeper is a little higher than that of upper soft sleeper.
When we say "sleeper", we mean it is comfortable enough to be used as a bed.
  15. Question: is there a chance of stopping on the way from Shanghai to Beijing for a night?
    Answer:
if you want to stop on the middle route, you will have to book another addtional train, one ticket corresponds with one train only.
  16. Question: what is the due date for the reservation?
    Answer:
There is no due date for ticket reservation indeed. Ticket office at the train station stops selling ticket 15 minutes before the departure time of the train.
  17. Question: I have heard about crime in China. Would you please give me a hint how to proceed in the Chinese train? Specifically, it will be a long trip and for sure I would go to the restaurant wagon or at least to a toilette leaving all my belongings maybe even in an empty compartment. Is there any secure solution?
    Answer:
It's more safe on the sleeper car of the train, however, there is no 100% safety to the passenger. The conductor will be on duty 24 hours a day at the other end of your sleeper car to care for your safety.
I would suggest you contact the conductor for special attention, if you have luxurious goods, you can let the conductor to collect them for you. Please take your highly-valued belongings with you when you are away from the compartment.
  18. Question: I am thinking about reserving a ticket from Beijing to Shanghai (25. 8.), however first I would like to know whether it is necessary to buy a ticket for a specific train leaving at a specific time, or whether the ticket is used for the route. For example, if I buy a Beijing -Shenyang ticket, will I be able to go by any train (train leaving on ny time) I choose?
    Answer:
China has different railway regulation comparing to that of your country. On the paper train ticket, information including train No, journey date, departure time, departure station, cabin number, seat number and etc are printed. Passenger can only choose to take the train that is printed on the ticket on the specified date and ticket will be invalid if you departure one day earlier or later. That means, you are not allowed to take other train on the same route.
  19. Question: We will be in Shanghai from 6th to 9th October 2011 to attend a wedding. We intend to travel out of Shanghai by 10th.i.e. Monday. Perhaps you can advise us if all the holidaymakers (enjoying National Day and the 'Golden Week) coming from all over the country would have left and return home by then. Otherwise we can forsee it is a chaotic time to move around with crowds of people everywhere.
    Answer:
Our national holiday begins on October 1st and ends at October 7th. Traffic volume will be largely reduced as soon as the holiday takes end and you can feel free to start your new journey on October 10th without worrying about any traffic jams.
  20. Question: I am travelling to China with my family on July 15. We will first go Beijing. Its a five-day trip. I am very excited about riding the high-speed bullet train, preferably the G-series.
We are a family of three--two adults and a two and half year child.
What would be the fare for the child from Beijing to Shanghai and Beijing to Qingdao.
Do these trains stop in between--can we take tickets for in-between stations.
    Answer:
You don't have to pay for the kid under 120cm to travel on any train in China and the kid can share a same seat with you.

  21. Question: Hello Elinor
I am trying to choose some trains for a trip between Shanghai and Beijing in Business Class. I have a question as we will be on the train over lunchtime; is any food included in the Business Class service like a plane? If not, is the food to buy on the train good or do you recommend buying this from the Shanghai train station before I board?
Thank you for all your advice!
    Answer:
Yep, passengers using business class services on Beijing-Shanghai high speed train can enjoy free drink, breakfast/lunch, snacks as well as other fast consuming goods including slipper, towel, earphone and etc. Breakfast or lunch valued RMB 30 Yuan each, it's good enough for local Chinese people. However, I don't know if it's fit your taste or not as western people.
  22. Question: Hi..........Is the Beijing-Shanghai fast train wheelchair friendly. If it is, which PLATFORM should be used?
    Answer:
Yep, Beijing-Shanghai high speed train is wheelchair friendly. Barrier free access is available for disabled or aged people at Beijing South Railway Station, which can be connected with the high speed train platform in just 1 minute. On board of the train, disabled spaces and barrier free channel is specially designated. All toilet room provides disability equipment services and designated disabled seats are also available o some train cars.
I'd suggest you ask people at the ticket counter for a disabled seat when you are trying to reserve ticket, this way, you may have chance to get a designated seat for a relaxing journey.
  23. Question:Hello
In April 2011 my wife and I travelled on G trains between Shanghai Hongqiao and Hangzhou, also Shanghai and Suzhou. We bought all tickets from the Ticket Vending Machines (TVM). The TVMs were excellent as they were so easy to use in English language and we could travel when we wanted without needing to make a reservation in advance.
I have read that I cannot use a TVM now unless I have a Chinese resident ID card. That is, I cannot use my Australian passport. Can you please tell me if this is correct.
We plan to visit China again in 2012, so I will check the Internet to see if the situation changes by then. I look forward to travelling on the Shanghai to Beijing high speed line, as well as day return trips Guangzhou - Shenzhen and Beijing - Tianjin on the high speed trains.
    Thank you for your help.
    Answer:
As far as I knew, overseas clients have to go to the ticket counter to train ticket and ticket vending machine (TVM) can only read the 2nd generation Chinese citizen ID card at current.
  24. Question:Hello
Is the D train is the bullet train... why D train takes more time than G train??
    Answer:
Even though D train and G train are both bullet trains, there are still some difference between the two types of trains.
D train, also known as Dong Che in China, is an innovative express train sharing the same traditional railway route with normal trains, while G train runs on designated high speed rail route with designated railway signals, equipments and train stations. Since G train has its own unique railway, it's quite faster in speed than D train.
  25. Question:
Dear Ms Zhu, my husband and i arrive in Beijing on 3 Feb and are looking at taking the bullet train in VIP class on 8 Feb to Shanghai sometime mid morning, we seem to not be able to book these seats online, can you book these, if not can you recommend how we go ab out doing this as hotel also seems unable to book them.
Also we are travelling with quite a bit of luggage, are there porters at the station.
    Please advise.
    Many thanks
    Answer:
You don't have to reserve ticket that early. You can reserve ticket once you have arrived Beijing on 3 Feb or 4 Feb through an ticket agency or from the ticket counter of the train station in case you can't book ticket online. Reason is that there are many many high speed trains running between Beijing and Shanghai for your choice as you can see on this webpage. What's more, only very few people would purchase deluxe class or business class seat as it's quite expensive.
You can find baggage porters wearing distinctive red hat at the waiting hall of Beijing South Train Station. By paying Renminbi 5 Yuan for each luggage (they may charge Renminbi 10 Yuan for big heavy luggage), the railway porter can transfer the luggage to the platform of your train. Working time for railway porter is from 6am to 11pm Monday to Sunday.
Once on board of the train, you can ask the conductor to lock the luggage.
  26. Question:
    Hi Elinor,
My husband and I are flying into Shanghai Pudong T2 on the 8th June at 10.40am. We plan to take a high speed train G130 at 12.10pm (afternoon). Therefore, I have the following questions:
    1) Is it foolish to assume that we can catch a train 1.5 hours after we land? How long will it take for us to travel from Shanghai Pudong T2 to Shanghai Hongqiao to board a train, with luggage, on time?
    2) Since we will not be in Shanghai for a long time before we leave for Beijing, how can we buy tickets in advance from overseas? I do not want to risk waiting until we reach Shanghai airport and buy tickets - which may not be available then. I understand that I can't use foreign credit cards to make online reservations on www.12306.cn. What are the other options on advanced booking if I don't live in Shanghai/China?
I would be very grateful if you could help me with answering these questions as I have already got many others answered by going through your FAQs.
    Thank you in advance,
    Kind regards,
    Answer:
    1) it's not possible to get to Hongqiao Train Station in that short time. By adding times on luggage collecting, customs clearance, transport from Shanghai Pudong Airport to Hongqiao Train Station and etc, I would suggest you leave 4 hours after landing at the airport for restarting the train journey.
    2) you can try to search the Internet to see if you can find other agency that provides ticket booking services. Otherwise, you can also try to purchase ticket after arriving the train station. Unlike trains on other routes/lines, there are still some surplus transportation capacity on Beijing-Shanghai high speed trains. That means, it's quite possible to successfully purchase tickets on the journey date. In case tickets of first or second class seat have been sold out, you can try to purchase deluxe seat ticket or business class seat. I knew there are always remaining business class seats on most G trains.
