Frequently Asked Questions on Beijing-Xi'an Train Travel

  1. Question:
    Hi,
    we are a family of 5, kids are 11, 10 & 7.
We are interested in purchasing train tickets from Beijing to Xian and have a few questions.
    1) are there discounts for children?
    2) what are the difference between hard and soft sleeper? Can you list the prices of children tickets for soft sleepers & hard sleepers
    Answer:
    1) There are some height criteria on children ticket on Chinese trains. According to the latest railway rule, children with the height under 120cm don't have to pay for rail trave, meanwhile, children with the height between 120cm-150cm enjoy the privilege to purchase discounted ticket for rail travel.
    2) Regarding the difference between hard sleeper and soft sleeper, there are 4 soft sleepers in 1 cabin, while there are 6 hard sleepers in 1 cabin, therefore, the size of soft sleepers is bigger than that of soft sleepers. Soft sleepers are more spacious and more enjoyable. On most Chinese trains, the soft sleeper is 70cm in width and 200cm in length, however hard sleeper is 60cm in width.
Children ticket price for bottom soft sleeper is Renminbi 299 Yuan and children ticket price for upper soft sleeper is Renminbi 282 Yuan on Beijing-Xi'an train.
On Beijing Xi'an train, children ticket prices for hard sleepers are Renminbi 192 Yuan (bottom), Renminbi 186 Yuan (middle) and Renminbi 180 Yuan (upper) respectively.

Leave Xian to return to Beijing approximately 7pm on 25th February 2012.
How many beds are in a deluxe sleeper?
If I book a soft sleeper can I book & pay for all 4 beds but only 2 people sleep in the cabin?
There will be 2 groups travelling.
    1st group is 2 adults.
    2nd group is 2 adults + 1 child-7 years old.
Your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards
    Answer:
    1. There are 2 beds each deluxe cabin including one upper beds and one lower bed.
    2. We have the busiest railway network in China and many people would like to travel by the train, therefore, it's not polite and not allowed to purchase a sleeper bed and keep it empty.

    Hello,
Our family of 4 will be travelling from Beijing to Xian on May 24, 2012. Answer:
To help you compare trains, we have specifically marked deluxe train with a asterisk * which you can find in this web page. Depending on which train would you like to take, ticket price may differ.
let me list prices on all these deluxe trains.
-- T75 & T76: price is RMB 710 for upper deluxe sleeper and price is RMB 740 Yuan for lower deluxe sleeper. Therefore, total cost for a two-bed room is Renminbi 1450 YUAN or approximate USD 231 dollar.

  4. Question:
    Hello,
Two of my friends and I are planning to go to Xian on March 9 to 11 and we have some questions regarding the train transportation:
    1. Does a hard sleeper carriage have a private bath? If no, how about a public one?
    2. Is the fare table above updated? Which is the best train to take?
    3. Where and how do we reserve tickets?
    Thanks!
    Answer:
    Let me answer your questions:
    1. Neither hard sleeper carriage nor soft sleeper carriage has bath room, that means, it's not possible to take a bath on any kind of China train including the deluxe train. There is a toilet room each carriage.
    2. Yep, what you see here is the latest train timetable and ticket price. It depends on your schedule, we do think that the best train should be that matches with your schedule exactly. Actually, there is no big difference between K train, T train and Z train in hardware facilities besides speed.
    3. To reserve ticket from us, you should tell us your journey date, the train you wanted to book, ticket type and ticket number for at least 2 weeks in advance. We will deliver ticket to your hotel in Beijing in your requested date and let the hotel receptionist to collect ticket for you.
  5. Question:
    Hi Elinor,
My friends and I would like to depart Beijing on the March 30, 8:30pm train T43 to Xi'an. Total 5 adults.
Can you please answer the following questions: 1) Does the train serve dinner on the evening rides or breakfast when you arrive (like on planes)?
    2) How early do I need to arrive at the train station before the train departs?
    3) Is the 424/442 RMB price represent lower bed and upper bed prices?
    4) How soon do I need to buy tickets for my friends and I if we want to take the March 30 train?
    thank you!
    Answer:
    1. The dining car of T43 locates between seat car and hard sleeper car on the 4th carriage. Dinner time on board of the train usually starts at 6pm and ends at 11pm. Breakfast time usually begins at 7am and ends at 9am. When dining time approaches, passengers will also be informed through speakers by the broadcaster on board the train. Passengers can enter the dining car for food service as long as it opens.
Unlike pricing policy of USA's Amtrak, meals are not included in ticket fare on any kind of trains in China.
    2. We advise you arrive Beijing West Train Station for at least 1 hour in advance. Beijing West Train Station is the 2nd largest train station in Asia and you will need time (5-10 minutes for example) to reach the corresponding waiting hall of your train after luggage inspection to enter the train station. Checking-in window will be opened shortly after you arrive as it opens 40 minutes in advance. If you arrive too late, you will not be refused to check-in as ticket checking service will be halted 5 minutes before the departure of the train.
    3. Yep, you are right. RMB 424 Yuan is price for an upper soft sleeper and RMB 442 Yuan is price for a lower soft sleeper.
    4. Advance ticket reservation period is 11 days maximum, therefore, you will be able to have your ticket reserved on March 19 for the journey schedule on March 30 through ticket agency.
  6. Question:
Hi Elinor, My companion and I will be travelling from Beijing to Xi'an on 10th May 2012 and I have some enquiries:
-I saw ticket price quoted in Renminbi Yuan, meanwhile, I want to know are there any additional fees?
-Is there a student price for our Beijing-Xi'an train tickets?
Thank you so much for your time and patience.
    Regards
    Answer:
-There is no addtional fee involved if you book through ticket counter of the train station. To book through ticket agency, they will charge RMB 5 Yuan each as booking fee. If you want to have the ticket deliver to your hotel, delivery fee will then be generated.
-No, students from overseas university have no right to purchase discounted train ticket in China. Even to China local students, they have no chances to purchase student ticket if they are traveling in different routes other than routes between their hometowns and cities they studied in. What's more, student tickets mainly apply in winter and summer holidays.
